1991-1993
Georgia Baptist pastors and laity begin discussing a need for a School of Theology in Georgia.

April 1993
W. Ches Smith, III, pastor, First Baptist Church of Tifton, Georgia, formally requests the Board of Trustees, of Mercer University, to consider the establishment of a School of Theology.

April 1993
The Mercer Board of Trustees authorizes the appointment of a Study Committee to determine the feasibility of beginning a School of Theology at Mercer University.

June 1993
President R. Kirby Godsey appoints a study committee composed of trustees, faculty, administrative officers, ministers, and lay persons.

June 1994
Upon the recommendation of President R. Kirby Godsey, the Mercer Board of Trustees, in a special meeting at Eagle's Landing in Stockbridge, Georgia, formally approves the establishment of the School of Theology. Former U.S. Attorney, General Griffin B. Bell, is serving as chairman of the Board of Trustees.

April 1995
The Board of Trustees makes the decision to locate the School of Theology on the University's Cecil B. Day Campus in Atlanta.

July 1995
The School of Theology names Dr. R. Alan Culpepper as inaugural dean.

October 1995 - May 1999
Ann White Morton was appointed as the first Theology Librarian. She began the initial development of Swilley's Theology collection.

February 1996
Groundbreaking ceremony is held for the 32,000-square-foot School of Theology Building.

August 1996
School of Theology classes begin with 44 degree-seeking students.

January 1997
First classes are held at the School of Theology Building.

April 1997
James and Carolyn McAfee of Atlanta announce a $10-million gift to the School of Theology.

April 1997
Upon the recommendation of President R. Kirby Godsey, the Mercer Board of Trustees formally approves the naming of the School the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology.

October 1997
Inaugural convocation and dedication of McAfee School of Theology is held at Mercer University.

May 1999
McAfee School of Theology holds its inaugural commencement, graduating 10 students and awarding honorary doctorates to James and Carolyn McAfee.

June 2000
McAfee School of Theology is granted associate membership in the Association of Theological Schools (ATS).

June 2001
McAfee School of Theology is granted candidate status in the ATS.

February 2002
An ATS visiting committee recommends full accreditation.
